What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. The term “maxillofacial” refers to the anatomic area of the jaws and face. After dental school, an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency provides extensive training in related medical and surgical disciplines such as general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, critical care medicine, anesthesia and pathology. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to treat patients in hospital settings, outpatient surgery centers and private offices.

A periodontist is a dental specialist who manages the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes to maintain the health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues. Periodontist under go extensive clinical training after graduating from dental school.
