Expert Oral Pathology Evaluation & Oral Biopsy Services

Changes in the tissues of the mouth, gums, tongue, lips, jaw, or throat should never be ignored. Oral pathology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. Our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons provide comprehensive oral pathology evaluations and oral biopsy procedures to identify abnormal tissue, investigate suspicious lesions, and support early diagnosis of oral diseases.

Early detection is critical for successful treatment outcomes, particularly when evaluating conditions that may be associated with oral cancer, precancerous changes, cysts, tumors, or chronic infections.

What Is an Oral Biopsy?

An oral biopsy is a minor surgical procedure used to remove a small sample of tissue for microscopic examination by a specialized pathology laboratory. Biopsies help determine whether abnormal tissue is benign, inflammatory, infectious, precancerous, or cancerous.

If you have a persistent lesion, lump, sore, discoloration, or tissue abnormality that has not healed within two weeks, a biopsy may be recommended to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

Signs That May Require an Oral Pathology Evaluation

You should seek professional evaluation if you experience:

  • Persistent mouth sores that do not heal
  • White, red, or mixed red-and-white patches
  • Lumps, growths, or thickened tissue
  • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or jaw
  • Chronic oral pain or irritation
  • Tongue abnormalities or lesions
  • Changes in gum tissue appearance
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Unexplained bleeding within the mouth
  • Jaw cysts or abnormal radiographic findings

Many oral abnormalities are harmless, but prompt evaluation is essential to rule out serious conditions and provide appropriate treatment.

Oral Cancer Screening & Early Detection

One of the most important benefits of oral pathology evaluation is the early detection of oral cancer. When diagnosed in its early stages, oral cancer is often more treatable and associated with improved outcomes.

Our surgeons carefully examine the oral cavity, tongue, cheeks, gums, palate, throat, and surrounding tissues for signs of abnormal changes that may require further investigation.

Early diagnosis can make a significant difference in treatment options and long-term health.

Types of Oral Lesions & Conditions Evaluated

Our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons routinely evaluate and diagnose:

  • Oral lesions and tissue abnormalities
  • Oral cysts and jaw cysts
  • Benign oral tumors
  • Oral cancer and precancerous lesions
  • Salivary gland disorders
  • Soft tissue growths
  • Bone abnormalities of the jaw
  • Chronic infections and inflammatory conditions

Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation helps ensure accurate treatment planning and timely intervention when necessary.

Oral Biopsy Procedure

Most oral biopsies are performed in-office using local anesthesia to maximize comfort. Depending on the size and location of the lesion, your surgeon may perform an incisional biopsy (removing a portion of tissue) or an excisional biopsy (removing the entire lesion).

Once the tissue sample is collected, it is sent to a pathology laboratory for detailed examination. After the results are received, your surgeon will discuss the findings and recommend any additional treatment if needed.
